LAND O’ LAKES (LOL)

Finally, after many years, my painting—inspired by an enchanted summer I spent in Minneapolis, Minnesota, known affectionately as the Land o’ Lakes—is nearing completion. I, myself, am amazed at how long it took me to develop the final composition and palette. It started as a pen-on-paper drawing I did while working at the Guthrie Theatre, playing the role of Biff in Arthur Miller’s acclaimed stage play Death of a Salesman.

Land O’ Lakes (LOL), ca 1992.

It was such a thrill to be at such a renowned institution, playing a lead role in an acclaimed and historic play. One of the highlights for me during that time was the purchase of my first cordless phone. What a technological wonder it seemed! It was a Sony, and it was top-of-the-line. I can’t remember how much it cost, but it was a pretty significant acquisition. It would have been impossible to imagine where phones would go beyond the cord.

There were so many wonderful experiences to be had during my time there, and this drawing served to capture it all. Doodling, for me, was a pastime that I employed during rehearsals mostly—sitting in a darkened theatre, waiting and watching the play take shape through scene work, blocking, tech rehearsals, dress rehearsals, etc. What a fantastic experience and a cherished memory!

The painting recaptures all of that in vivid color. I can’t wait to sign it and post it here for you to see, so be sure to come back again soon!
